REWE Karlsfeld – On the rise with Waterloop
The new project in the long-standing partnership between the REWE Group and Schweitzer aimed to bring the REWE store in Karlsfeld up to the latest refrigeration technology standards with an innovative cooling concept.
After a two-month renovation phase, the store was opened to customers on April 3, 2025.
The basis for the renovation was the store concept developed by our retail design agency Interstore 2020 for REWE, which has been implemented by Schweitzer in various markets.
The highlight of the REWE store in Karlsfeld is the cooling system: with modern, plug-and-play refrigeration units and counters produced by Schweitzer, the cooling is generated locally (without the need for a central refrigeration system) at the refrigeration unit or cooling point, and the waste heat is transported away via a Waterloop system (water circulation).
This cooling solution allows for flexible store layout design: for example, the counter for the meat selection can be expanded with a cooling element during the grilling season. Additional advantages of the Waterloop system include its energy efficiency and the possibility to use the waste heat for heating the store.
Another standout feature of the plug-and-play refrigeration units with the Waterloop system is the use of the environmentally friendly refrigerant R290. All refrigeration units, counters, and cold rooms are supplied with up to 500g of refrigerant and feature inverter-controlled compressors for energy optimization.
